Banner Sizes Guide Kenya: Common Dimensions for Events, Shops and Outdoor Advertising
A practical Kenya banner size guide covering outdoor, event, roll-up and teardrop displays, plus viewing distance and layout considerations.
Choosing the right banner size is not simply a question of budget. The dimensions should match the available space, viewing distance, product type, amount of information and how the banner will be installed or displayed.
Start with the physical space
Measure the actual wall, fence, booth, stage, doorway or floor area before design work begins. For custom PVC or mesh banners, record the available width and height in metres. For portable displays, confirm the hardware dimensions first because the artwork must match the stand.
Do not design a banner at an arbitrary size and hope to scale it later. Changing proportions can force the artwork to be cropped or stretched.
There is no single standard banner size
The best size depends on the product. Custom PVC banners can be made around the available space, while roll-up banners and teardrop displays use defined hardware sizes.
| Banner type | Size approach | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| PVC or mesh banner | Custom width × height | Walls, fences, shopfronts, events and temporary promotions |
| Standard roll-up | 80 × 200 cm | Offices, meetings, training and events |
| Broad-base roll-up | 85 × 200 cm | Exhibitions, conferences and branded spaces |
| Teardrop display | Xpress currently lists 2.5 m, 3 m, 4 m and 5 m options | Entrances, activations and outdoor visibility |
| Backdrop | Chosen around venue width and group size | Photography, media walls, launches and event stages |
Banner size for a shopfront or fence
Measure the usable surface rather than the entire wall or fence. Account for doors, windows, columns and any sections that should remain visible. Long horizontal formats often work well because they follow the shape of shopfronts and perimeter fences.
For exposed fences, the material decision matters as much as the dimensions. See the PVC vs mesh guide if wind exposure is a concern.
Banner size for events and stages
Event banners are often viewed from farther away and may also appear in photographs. A stage-front banner needs different proportions from a backdrop behind speakers. Measure the stage or branded area and consider where people, screens and furniture will sit.
For photography backdrops, allow enough width that the brand remains visible around the people in the photograph. See event backdrop options for dedicated media-wall formats.
Roll-up banner dimensions
Xpress currently offers a standard 80 × 200 cm roll-up and an 85 × 200 cm broad-base option. Both are tall vertical displays designed to use relatively little floor space.
The extra width on the broad-base option gives the artwork more horizontal room, but neither format should be treated like a brochure. Keep the main message high enough to remain visible when people or furniture are nearby.
For a deeper comparison, read the roll-up banner size guide.
Teardrop banner sizes
Teardrop flags use dedicated pole and flag hardware, so the artwork follows the display template rather than a simple rectangle. Xpress currently lists 2.5 m, 3 m, 4 m and 5 m options. Choose the height around the intended viewing distance, venue and available space.
For outdoor use, also confirm the base required for the actual surface. See the teardrop banner page for current options.
How viewing distance changes the design
The farther away someone is, the larger the headline and key information need to be. A banner beside a registration desk can carry more detail than one intended for drivers or people across a field.
- Use one clear headline.
- Keep supporting copy short.
- Make the logo large enough to recognise.
- Use one obvious action such as a phone number, website, QR code or event date.
- Avoid filling unused space with extra text simply because the banner is large.
Horizontal vs vertical banners
Horizontal formats are natural for walls, fences, stage fronts and long shopfronts. Vertical formats work well beside doors, registration desks and exhibition booths where floor width is limited. Portable roll-up and flag systems are designed specifically for vertical presentation.
Measure before approving artwork
Before the design is finalised, confirm:
- Final physical width and height
- Whether the banner is horizontal or vertical
- The installation or display hardware
- The expected viewing distance
- Any areas that will be blocked by furniture or people
- Whether finishing, eyelets or a frame affect safe areas
Common sizing mistakes
Designing before measuring: this can create awkward cropping when the final size is confirmed.
Using too much copy: a larger banner does not automatically support more information.
Ignoring hardware: roll-up, teardrop and pop-up systems have defined dimensions that artwork must follow.
Forgetting the viewing environment: a banner that looks clear from one metre away may be unreadable from across a road or conference hall.
Not sure what size to order?
Send the available space, intended use, approximate viewing distance and a photograph of the location where possible. Xpress can then help you choose a practical format before the artwork is finalised.
